First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. First edition. 405pp. Illustrated plates from black and white photographs. Binding trifle cocked and lightly worn, tiny faint stain at the topedge and gutter of the last third of the text, a near fine copy. The author and judge's strongly anti-narcotics work. "While the book is mostly about opium it also contains early 20th century claims about cannabis and cocaine" (University of Victoria, Canada). Sometimes published under the pseudonym, Janey Canuck, Emily F. Murphy was a Canadian writer and women's rights activist. Appointed in 1916, she was the first woman magistrate in Canada and in the British Empire. Among her well-known contributions to feminism was her work with The Famous Five, insisting that women be considered "qualified persons" under Canadian law, which would enable them to serve in the Senate, a case they eventually won. Alas, she also believed in eugenics and, partially because of her strong campaigning, the Sexual Sterilization Act of 1928 was passed in Alberta, Canada.
